Latino Film Festival Elgin Opens with Family-friendly Film

ELGIN—The seventh annual Latino Film Festival Elgin will kick off at 5:30 p.m. April 5 with a reception at Elgin Community College, 1700 Spartan Dr., in the Spartan Auditorum.
Viewers will see “Lo que siento por ti (What I Feel For You).” The movie depicts pro-life stories of a mother caring for her two autistic youngsters; a couple trying unsuccessfully to have a child, and a father supporting his child who is a Special Olympics athlete. An opening reception will follow.
Independently made drama and comedy movies from Dominican Republic, Cuba, Peru, Mexico and Costa Rica are scheduled. All movies are in Spanish with English subtitles.
Films will be shown April 6 and 7 at Marcus Theatres, 111 S. Randall Road, in Elgin.
Shows scheduled April 6 are rated R and intended for mature audiences.
At 5 p.m., “Nido de Mantis (Mantis Nest),” from Cuba will be shown. It tells the story of a crime romance and illustrates the migratory crisis from Cuba to the United States in 1994.
At 7 p.m. there will be a showing of Peru’s “Caiga Quien Caiga (All Can Fall),” which tells the story of the capture of Vladimiro Montesinos, a former advisor of the country’s ex-president Alberto Fujimori.
Shows on April 7 are for all ages.
At 3 p.m., Mexico’s entry, “Tiempos de Lluvia (In Times of Rain)” is scheduled. This is the story of an indigenous woman residing in Mexico City while her mom takes care of her son. There is a conflict when she wants to bring her child to live with her while his grandma thinks it is better for him to stay in the indigenous reservation.
Showing at 5 p.m. is Costa Rica’s “El Baile de la Gacela (The Dance of the Gazelle),” The story shows how the love and passion for dancing have no age.
The Elgin festival is an affiliate of the Chicago Latino Film Festival, which was established in 1985.
For the opening night show and celebration, general admission is $30 and for senior citizens, $20.
Tickets are $15 Saturday and Sunday. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door the day of the event.
