Huntley Knights and SPRED Host Parish’s 1st Special Needs Mass
July 4, 2019
HUNTLEY—On June 8, St. Mary Parish, here, celebrated its first Special Needs Mass hosted by the St. Mary Knights of Columbus Council 11666 and Special Religious Development (SPRED) ministry.

The Mass was designed to assist those who have difficulty coming to Mass regularly and was held in the parish hall.

The location has fewer distractions than can come with the ornate church for those with intellectual or developmental disabilities.

It also allowed for special configuration for those who may have physical disabilities.

Father Max Striedl, pastor, presided over the Mass.

The relaxed atmosphere meant almost anything could happen. For example, when the lector finished the first reading, he began to hug everyone at the altar. He then started hugging everyone else at the Mass.

“Everyone can use more hugs,” said Father Striedl as he started his homily.

The St. Mary Choir performed simple music for the Mass.

Mass-goers could also be anointed with oil, and Catholics were able to receive Communion, whether at the altar or at their chairs.

Rides were provided to those who needed them.

The event was followed by a luncheon.
