Deacon Brandenburg Dies Feb. 4 in Dixon

DIXON—Deacon Robert Eugene Brandenburg, 91, of Dixon, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020, at Rock River Hospice and Home. 
 
He was born July 7, 1928, in Portland, Ore., the son of Henry and Minnie (Carlson) Brandenburg. Deacon Brandenburg  worked as a commission man at the Chicago Stock Yards, a cattle buyer and then for the Illinois Department of Agriculture for 13 years prior to his retirement in 1991.
 
He was a member of St Patrick Parish in Dixon. 
 
He was ordained a permanent deacon in the Rockford Diocese in 1993 and served his home parish in many capacities for many years. 
 
He was also a member of Dixon Knights of Columbus Council 690. 
 
He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Notre Dame fan.
 
He was a veteran of the Army, serving during the Korean War from January  1951 to January 1953. 
 
He married Arlene Maxey July 20, 1953, in Austin, Minn. She preceded him in death July 4, 2007. 
 
He also was preceded in death by his parents; son Michael; great grandson Braiden; and brothers Donald Brandenburg and Vernon Brandenburg.
 
Deacon Brandenburg is survived by four sons, John (Robyn) Brandenburg of Moline, Daniel (Julie) Brandenburg of Decaturville, Tenn., Matthew (Doris) Brandenburg, Alvin, Texas, and Timothy (Cindy) Brandenburg of Blue Grass, Iowa; two daughters, Carrol (Stanley) Gooding of Godfrey, and Catherine (Randy) Roux of Dixon; daughter in law Kim Brandenburg of Sea Brook, Texas; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grand-children; one brother Bill (Sharon) Brandenburg of Rochester, Minn., and sister-in-law Rita Brandenburg of Austin, Minn.
 
A funeral Mass was Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020, at St. Patrick Parish in Dixon with Father Keith Romke, pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors followed at Oakwood Cemetery in Dixon. 
 
The family extended thanks to Father Romke and to Father Thomas Doyle, pastor of St. Anne Parish in Dixon.
 
In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. Mary or St. Anne schools in Dixon.
