Traditional Fall Fundraisers Turn Mostly Virtual for 2020
September 24, 2020
DIOCESE—Several fundrasers traditionally held in the Rockford Diocese in the early fall have new looks this year.

The Knights of Columbus intellectual disabilities fundraisers (the Tootsie Roll drives)  have mostly been held.

St. Vincent de Paul Society’s Friends of the Poor Walk and Respect Life Sunday Life Chains have gone virtual or individual, and some cancelled.

Details for SVdP walks from parishes that responded to a request from The Observer are included here. If your parish is not listed, check your bulletin for details.

Life Chain information will appear in the Oct. 3 issue.

Friends of the Poor Walks

Algonquin
St. Margaret Mary: Families and friends may walk or make donations anytime during September. Go to the parish website and donate to the SVdP Friends of the Poor Walk. All three of the friars at the parish will walk this year and parishioners may sponsor them with a pledge. Pledge for your favorite friar (or other walker) with a credit card at www.fopwalk.org/event/2537.

Aurora
Holy Angels: Sept. 26 virtual walk. Father Dean Smith plans to walk the 5K distance as the SVdP representative for the parish. Father Smith will be walking by himself and will practice social distancing as he encounters people during the walk.

Elgin
St. Laurence and St. Thomas More:  The parishes are hosting a combined campaign celebrating St. Vincent de Paul’s feast day on Sept. 27.  Parishioners at both churches have been asked to donate money during the month of September to help those in need in our community. Make a secure, tax deductible donation at https://kindest.com/campaign/st-vincent-depaul-feast-day, by using the envelopes available at the churches, or by taking a donation to either church office.

Rockford Council
Rockford area SVdP conferences: Sept. 26 virtual walk. Instead of the usual route along the Rock River Recreation Path, the walk will be held virtually or individually this year. “Spirit Walkers”  may support the event with prayer or a donation. Drop a note with a prayer promise or donation check in your parish’s collection basket. Donate or register to walk your preferred route at www.
fopwalk.org/event/2533. Proceeds will benefit people in Winnebago County served by SVdP regardless of which parish your donation is supporting. Info: Laura Ortiz, 815-262-0206, svdp@stritarockford.org; Colette Anderson, 815-243-0317, crazygps@aol.com.
