Adrian Dominicans Mark Jubilees

ADRIAN, Mich.—Two Adrian Dominicans who served in the Diocese of Rockford are among sisters who celebrate jubilees this year.
Sister Alma Marie Messing, OP, 75 years
Sister Alma Marie Messing, OP, entered the Adrian Dominican Congregation in 1944, professed first vows in 1946 and final vows in 1951.
She holds a bachelor’s degree from Siena Heights College, Mich., and a master’s degree from the Institute of St. Thomas, Ohio.
She taught at school in Florida, the Bahamas and Michigan from 1949-1967. She taught in Wilmette for a year.
In the Rockford Diocese, she taught at Bishop Muldoon High School in Rockford, 1968-1971.
She did graduate studies, then taught in Chicago. She then worked at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, 1983-2001.
She retired and lives at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in the ministry of prayer and presence.
Sister Ann Rena Shinkey, OP, 60 years
Sister Ann Rena Shinkey, OP, entered the Adrian Dominican Congregation in 1960, professed first vows in 1961 and final vows in 1966.
She holds a bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University, Normal, a master’s degree from the University of Florida and an M.Ed. degree from DePaul University, Chicago.
Her service was in Illinois, including at schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago.
In the Diocese of Rockford, she taught from 1967 to 1971 and then was also assistant principal at St. Edward Central Catholic High School, Elgin. She was assistant principal at Boylan Central Catholic High School, Rockford, 1976-1981; and was principal and superintendent at Marian Central Catholic High School in Woodstock, 1981-1983.
She than served in the Diocese of Peoria for a year, then returned to the Chicago Archdiocese to teach at Mother McAuley High School, 1984-1992.
She returned to her hometown of Streator to care for her parents for six years, then retired there until 2011. She now lives at the Motherhouse of the Adrian Dominican Sisters in the ministry of prayer and presence.
