Holy Family Remembers Unborn
Memorial blessed during Prolife Month
October 15, 2020
ROCKFORD—A recently installed prolife memorial at Holy Family Parish here was blessed after the 8:45 a.m. Mass on Oct. 9.
The statue is modeled after a painting created around 1580 by the Italian painter Scipione Pulzone whose work was titled “Mater Divinae Providentiae.”
The infant in her arms, said Steve Garbe of the parish prolife committee, represents Jesus, but the memorial also remembers all children lost before being born, including from abortion.
The memorial was eight years in the making, first envisioned by committee member Gary Knoll while praying in the parish adoration chapel.
From that time, the annual parish prolife banquets not only educated attendees about the issues that affect life from conception through natural death, but also raised funds through silent and live auctions to pay for the memorial. Private donations also helped fund the statue.
Artisan Granite in Rhode Island created the statue. Landscaping for the memorial from Arc Design was fine-tuned by Steve Ambrose.
Elements of the memorial are reminiscent of the Eucharist in a monstrance and the benches are placed to reflect a Celtic cross.
