Prepare Your Soul with a Good Confession

What is our greatest threat personally and collectively? Looking around, we may identify many dangers. However, the Second Sunday of Advent points us directly to the source and cause of it all: sin.

Sin, from the beginning, is the root of dysfunction in our lives and our world. St. Paul instructs us, “Sin came into the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all men sinned” (Rm 5:12). The death of which Paul speaks is spiritual death caused by grave or mortal sin. In sin, we turn our lives away from God and His Fatherhood.

As St. John warns us, “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (1 Jn 1:8).

Sin is the bad news opposite of the Gospel (the good news). If we do not see how bad the bad news is, then the good news of the Gospel is simply news and does not affect our lives.

John the Baptist is “the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.......” (Mk 1:3). He came, “preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins” (Mk 1:4). It says all of Judea came confessing their sins and receiving the baptism of repentance in the Jordan.

This baptism is but a symbol and preparation for the baptism that the One who is mightier than John will bring — the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit, who is the love between the Father and the Son, is the Spirit of love. The sacrament of confession invokes the same Spirit of love to cleanse us of sins committed after baptism.

Prepare for Christmas with a powerful cleansing of your soul in confession. Your priest is delighted to help you. You will experience the light of faith, not the darkness of sin, the abundance of hope in Christ and not the despair of the world, and the fire of charity, not the coldness of self-centeredness.

The love poured into our hearts through confession is God’s precious gift and Good News.
