Theories abound when it comes to the difficulties that employers, religious and secular, are experiencing as they seek new employees for a record-high number of job openings. 

 

The pandemic is a likely culprit for some people’s decisions to retire now instead of later, to stay at home with their children, to continue to benefit from the extra money provided by the federal government to those who collect unemployment benefits, or to back away from work that requires contact with the public.

 

“The proportion of Americans who quit their jobs in April reached its highest level in more than 20 years,” said a July 2 article in the Rockford Register-Star.

 

Sam Castree, senior vice president and general counsel at Staff Management, notes that “it certainly has been more challenging” for their clients “to get a good pool of candidates for certain positions.” 

 

He says that a “common complaint” for many businesses has been that, in addition to problems finding people, some who are scheduled for interviews cancel or simply don’t show up.

 

That’s been the case for entry level and more experienced positions, he says, adding that skilled laborers have “always” been hard to find for manufacturing positions.

 

“The current situation has made it even more difficult,” he says.

 

The Diocese of Rockford employs about 3,000 people in the 11 counties that it serves. Its employees include secretaries, teachers, musicians, computer technologists, custodial, accountants, business managers, liturgists, and more. 

 

Positions may be full or part-time. Some positions require that the applicant be Catholic; others do not.
