Washing of the Feet Tradition of Service Returns
April 21, 2022
ROCKFORD—The Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, April 14, celebrated at the Cathedral of St. Peter, saw the return of a tradition of service: the washing of the feet.

The washing of the feet had been absent from the Holy Thursday Mass for two years due to COVID-19 safety restrictions. The act of service is one of many liturgical practices and celebrations that are returning across the diocese.

Bishop David Malloy washed the feet of several Mass attendees, following Jesus’ words in the Gospel reading: “If I …  have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do” (Jn 13:14-15).
