Memorial Day Mass Honors Sacrifices
June 2, 2022
WINNEBAGO—Catholic cemeteries around the Rockford Diocese hosted Masses on May 30, including Calvary Cemetery with celebrant Bishop David Malloy.

The early afternoon Mass on the hot and windy day included prayers for the “men and women of the military who’ve offered what President Lincoln called ‘the last full measure,’” Bishop Malloy said, sharing a bit of history about the holiday.

He encouragd remembrance and prayers for those who returned home with injuries and “lifetimes of pain.”

Regarding the Mass, he said, “We might say that it’s our repayment to them … a repayment that is pointing to eternity, and for that reason, I’m especially grateful to all of you who have (come).”

The crowd included several Knights of Columbus and persons of all ages, several dressed in red, white and blue, and many holding small flags.
