GENEVA—A Fox Valley tradition, the Barn Sale, has been hosted by a Catholic parish for more than 30 years.
The two-day gigantic “garage sale” will be held at the Kane County Fairgrounds in St. Charles, Sept. 20, 8 a.m.-3 p.m., and Sept. 21, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
Months ahead of the sale, volunteers collect, sort and box merchandise donated from the community.
This year 19 semi-trailers of merchandise were collected and will be on sale at the fairgrounds.
The mission of the Barn Sale is three-fold:
-- Act for charity
Many members of the Fox Valley and surrounding areas rely on the sale each year to provide items for their homes that they would otherwise not be able to acquire.
The Barn Sale is a chance to recycle usable items that are no longer needed by current owners. In addition, items remaining after the sale are donated to local charities to help in their mission.
-- Augment parish revenue
Proceeds help with parish finances.
-- Build community
The Barn Sale is a chance for parishioners to meet one another and work side-by-side toward a common goal.
The greater community joins in by donating gently used merchandise, big and small, knowing it will be sold at low prices, or donated to other charities to support their missions.
Businesses in the community donate or lend many of the tools and machinery needed to make the sale a success.
