ROCKFORD—As part of the celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday at the Cathedral of St. Peter, a small group gathered to view the film, “The Original Image of Divine Mercy.”

Kim Swenson of Holy Family Parish in Rockford attended the viewing at the invitation of her son. She said that she felt a special devotion to the Divine Mercy story after seeing the film in this Year of Mercy.

“I thought the movie was very enlightening, very touching and emotional,” she said. “My son bought me the book of Sister Faustina, so that really piqued my interest to see the movie and learn more about the Divine Mercy image.”

His interest in Church history and a desire to deepen his faith were two of the reasons that brought John Foti of the Cathedral parish to the screening.

“I just loved the movie,” he said. “I love this kind of history. It gives you a better appreciation of the story behind the Divine Mercy painting.

“The devotion to Divine Mercy and the struggles that occurred during the time this piece was created are really amazing,” he continued. “It’s unbelievable to see this painting come through World War II and be so revered today.”

The screening was preceded by  Mass and lunch and was followed by confession and benediction.
