AURORA—Women from St. Joseph Parish, here, inspired by the Year of Mercy and women from St. Patrick Parish in Maytown, have created dozens of clothing items for needy children.

Seamstresses were Irene Geltz, Rita Lempa, Cindy McManamon, Lynne Monaco, Lenore Blatner, Kathleen Hettinger, Joan Lutz, Carolyn Michels and Pat Oleck.

Their efforts started with a December bulletin suggestion that a good way to celebrate the jubilee year was by performing spiritual and corporal works of mercy.

The women found an article, “Sewing Dresses for Africa,” in The Observer (July 24, 2015). From that, they decided to “clothe the naked.”

“A very big thank you to the women of Maytown,” wrote Lenore Blatner in a letter to The Observer.

“Their article provided all the information needed for our parish to being this ministry. We are very grateful to all of you.”

Between February and May, the women of St. Joseph mare more than 120 dresses in different colors and sizes.

The dresses were displayed at the parish May 14 and 15 before being sent to Africa, Haiti and to Food for the Poor.

The women of St. Joseph plan to continue sewing for needy children during the upcoming winter.

Those interested in joining them may write to Blatner at St. Joseph Parish, 722 High St., Aurora, IL 60505.
