Nick Doherty, now Brother Ignatius Pio Mariae, made his final vows as a Franciscan Friar of the Renewal on Aug. 7. Father John Paul Ouellette, received Brother Ignatius Pio Mariae Doherty’s perpetual vows.
A cousin to Bishop Timothy Doherty of the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana, he grew up in Holy Family Parish in Rockford.
He joined the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal in 2010 and serves at their house in Honduras. The order is based in New York City with two houses in Central America, one in New Mexico and a handful in England and Ireland.
The final vows were held in New York City. A parish party back in Rockford was held the following weekend.
Brother Ignatius hopes to start his graduate seminary studies within a few years and eventually be ordained to the priesthood.
