Storytelling Project Continues to Seek Memories of Poor Clares
September 15, 2016

ROCKFORD—As The Observer reported back in April, author Abbie Reese is continuing her collaboration with the Poor Clare Colettines of Rockford.

Her book, “Dedicated to God: An Oral History of Cloistered Nuns,” was the first selection for The Observer’s One Diocese, One Book program.

She followed that up with the documentary film, “Chosen (Custody of the Eyes).”

Reese’s newest effort is through The Storytelling Trust. People who have memories of or family stories about the Poor Clare Colettines of Rockford are invited to share them at the Storytelling website.

“As I have been speaking at parishes and universities in the Rockford Diocese and even in communities outside of the region,” Reese says, “individuals have been sharing their stories about how the Corpus Christi Monastery was present in their lives, and how the nuns have helped shape their experiences.

“I am asking people to write in with their stories, during this centennial jubilee celebration, so that the memories can be documented. Some of the people who write in may be contacted for a follow-up interview.”

Reese’s first storytelling project was in 2008, when she collected oral histories for “Untold Stories: Freeport’s African-American History” for the city of Freeport.

The collection of stories about the Poor Clares is an extension of that storytelling project.

Participants may share their stories through an interactive online form at http://storytellingtrust.org/share-your-story.html.
