Ministry Formation Program Starts Up in Fall

July 10, 2025

DIOCESE—Applications are now being accepted for the next Ministry Formation Program, a two-year adult formation program that is provided by the Diocese of Rockford for lay Catholics.

The program offers participants a chance to grow in leadership skills, deepen spiritual awareness, enhance theological knowledge and develop pastoral skills for a student’s choice of a particular area of ministry.

One possible area of ministry is in the permanent diaconate. Completing the Ministry Formation Program is the first step to becoming a deacon.

Sessions are offered in English and Spanish as follows: English sessions in Crystal Lake, Dixon, Geneva and Rockford; Spanish sessions in Aurora, Crystal Lake and Rockford. Participants meet each year from August to May on nine Saturdays, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and nine weekdays, 7-9 p.m. Those who must miss a session in their preferred location are welcome to attend the session at a different location.

In addition to the 18 sessions, there are two retreats and a specialization day each year.

Potential candidates for the Ministry Formation Program must be endorsed by their pastors. Parishioners interested in the program should contact their pastor or a member of the parish staff to discern
their involvement.

The application forms can be obtained from the Ministry Formation Office, including on its website at:

The yearly tuition fee is $500; a non-refundable application fee is $30. Payment plans are available.

“Well trained lay ministers will promote the Gospel and encourage the involvement of others!” says the Office of Ministry Formation. Testimonies from past graduates can be found on the program’s website above.
