As Permanent Diaconate Marks Anniversary, Deacons-to-Be Take Steps in Formation

October 23, 2025

ROCKFORD—On Oct. 11 at the Cathedral of St. Peter, men discerning the permanent diaconate took steps forward in their formation. Father Brian Grady, current director of the permanent diaconate program, was involved in the ceremonies for two deacon classes.

The class of 2026 (left, wearing albs) were installed as acolytes. This is the final step before ordination, which is set for fall of next year. Their ministry as acolytes includes assisting the priest and deacon at the altar during Mass. They will serve during liturgies, distribute holy Communion and purify sacred vessels.

The class of 2028 (right) were admitted to candidacy. Admission to Candidacy means these men have publicly expressed their intention to receive ordination as deacons and to serve others as an ordained cleric.

At an Oct. 17 celebration for the 50th anniversary of the permanent diaconate in the Rockford Diocese, Bishop David Malloy mentioned that during his 13 years as bishop, he has heard about how well-formed Rockford’s deacons are from Catholics in and outside the diocese. He credited the deacons’ seven years of formation (including completing the Ministry Formation Program).

The role of deacons is “more than just service at table,” he said, pointing to Acts 6. “Deacons are made to be spiritual contributors to the diocese and to the life of the Church.”
