ROSCOE—Deacon Phil E. Abel, 78, of Roscoe, passed away peacefully on Feb. 15, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was born June 9, 1947, in Belvidere to Paul E. and Evelyn F. (Holt) Abel.
Deacon Phil was raised on a family farm in Belvidere — an upbringing he spoke of with pride throughout his life. Those early years instilled in him a strong work ethic, a sense of responsibility, and unwavering family values that became the foundation of the man he would become. He married the love of his life, Marie F. Ryan, and together they shared 45 wonderful years of marriage built on faith, devotion, and partnership.
Deacon Abel dedicated most of his professional life to Ingersoll Cutting Tool, where he was known for his reliability and commitment. He also served his community as a Reserve Officer with the sheriff’s departments of Boone County and Winnebago County, reflecting his lifelong desire to protect and serve others.
Ordained as a deacon 25 years ago, Deacon Abel’s faith was central to his life and identity. He was a devoted member of St. Bridget Catholic Church, where he faithfully served his parish community. He led the church’s food pantry ministry for many years, continuing to coordinate and support its mission even after his health prevented him from being there in person. Helping others was never just something Deacon Abel did — it was who he was.
Above all, Deacon Abel was the steadfast protector and heart of his family. He found great joy in participating in the wedding Masses of his daughter and grandson, and he was honored to baptize many of his grandchildren — sacred moments he treasured deeply. His life was defined by generosity, compassion, and quiet strength.
Deacon Phil E. Abel will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and servant of faith whose kindness and dedication touched countless lives. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Evelyn Abel.
