ROCKFORD—The St. Elizabeth Catholic Community Center was as busy as Santa’s workshop Dec. 17, when Bishop David Malloy, Catholic Charities staff, and many volunteers were making spirits bright at the Snowflake Shop.
The Christmas tradition began, as usual, with donations of toys and clothing from individuals, area parishes and local businesses. Low-income parents registered through Catholic Charities and paid a small amount to select a gift and clothing for each child.
The morning of Dec. 17, Bishop Malloy led a prayer with staff and volunteers, and the doors were opened for families to shop. The festive crew worked “tirelessly” as personal shoppers and gift wrappers, recalled Cathy Weightman-Moore in a note to The Observer.
“This year, 119 families were served, providing gifts to more than 420 children,” said Weightman-Moore, Catholic Charities director. “We are
deeply grateful.”
