Resettlement Efforts Ongoing in Rockford Diocese
February 2, 2023
Regardless of how the new Welcome Corps Program will affect local resettlement agencies, the Rockford Diocese’s Refugee Resettlement Services continues to assist those individuals and families escape danger and find new and peaceful homes in the Rockford Diocese.

Through Operation Allies Welcome, the Refugee Resettlement Services Program was able to resettle 76 Afghans as well as 95 other refugees in fiscal year 2022 according to Biljeskovic. The program has been busy since the COVID-19 restrictions in most countries including the U.S. have been relaxed or lifted. Prior to COVID the program settled as many as 350 refugees annually.

The program is funded in part by the annual diocesan appeal. The program can always use additional support. Biljeskovic said the program is always in need of household and personal items for refugees. Those items include cleaning supplies and hygiene products for men, women and children.

Some items most needed are Twin and Queen size sheets and comforters, towels, pillows, shower curtains, garbage cans, large pots, plates, utensils, laundry detergent, shampoo and diapers. They are also in need of kitchen tables, chairs, new or gently used sofas and dressers.
