Two Additional ‘New’ Pastors Introduced

DIOCESE—In addition to the nine new pastors introduced in The Observer’s May 26 issue, two former parochial administrators have been named pastors of their respective parishes where they had served.

They are Father Jhonatan Sarmiento and Father William Vallejo.

Father Sarmiento is now Pastor of St. James, Rockford

ROCKFORD—Born in Los Patios, Colombia, Father Jhonatan Sarmiento studied at the Institute INEM in Cucuta, Colombia and at Seminario Menor San Jose there. He attended college at Pontifica Universidad Javenana, Bogota, Colombia (2007-2008), at St. John Vianney Seminary (St. Thomas University) in St. Paul, Minn. (2010-2011), and at St. Gregory the Great Seminary in Seward, Neb. (2011-2014) and at St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. (2014-2018). He studied Canon Law at Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington D.C., graduating with a Licentiate in Canon Law (JCL) on Jan. 8, 2022.
 
He was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop David Malloy at the Cathedral of St. Peter on June 2, 2018.
 
Following ordination, Father Sarmiento first served as parochial vicar at St. Patrick Parish in St. Charles (2018-2019), then at Christ the Teacher Parish in DeKalb (2019-2020). He served on the Stewardship Commission, representing the DeKalb Deanery (2019-2022). He served also as an associate master of ceremonies for the diocese beginning in 2018.
 
Following summer studies for Canon Law (2019), he studied full time beginning in August 2020. He was named the administrator of St. James Parish in Rockford and also served part-time at the Diocesan Tribunal beginning Aug. 20, 2021, becoming an advocate at the tribunal Dec. 1, 2021.
 
He was named pastor of St. James Parish Feb. 19, 2023, and continues working also at the Diocesan Tribunal
 
Father William Vallejo becomes Pastor of St. Monica Parish in Carpentersville
 
CARPENTERSVILLE—Born in Bogota, Colombia, Father Vallejo studied at the Instituto Tecnico Industrial Piloto there (1979-1984). 
 
He then attended college at the Archdiocesan Major Seminary in San Jose in Bogota (1986-1988), then earned a degree there in philosophy (1988), and a degree in theology from the Archdiocesan Major Seminary, Santa Rosa de Lima in Caracas, Venezuela (1995). 
 
He was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Freddy Fuenmayor in Los Teques, Venezuela, on Oct. 12, 1996, for the Diocese of Los Teques.
 
He began service in the Diocese of Rockford in 2008 and was incardinated into the Rockford Diocese on Oct. 20, 2010.
 
He began to serve in this diocese as parochial vicar at St. Nicholas Parish in Aurora from February to July 2008. Father Vallejo then was parochial vicar at St. Patrick in Rochelle (2008-2013). He was administrator at that parish from January 2013 to July 2013, then became administrator at St. Edward Parish in Rockford. He became pastor at St. Edward’s, serving in that position from 2014-2020, and also was the spiritual director for the Cursillistas (Cursillo movement) from October 2016 to February 2017.
 
Father Vallejo was parochial vicar at St. Monica Parish in Carpentersville (2021-2022), then became administrator there for a year before being named pastor at St. Monica on Feb. 26, 2023.
