Diocese Earns Three National Media Awards

BALTIMORE—The Observer and the Diocese of Rockford were recognized for excellence during the Catholic Media Association’s annual conference held here June 7-9. 
More than 3,000 journalistic entries were submitted for award consideration in the annual competition for books, magazines, newspapers, online articles and journalism excellence by individuals.
The Official Directory of the Diocese of Rockford earned a third-place award in the book award category for the 2022-2023 directory,  with the judges noting the quality of the printing and placement of color throughout the directory.
The Observer Catholic newspaper staff earned an honorable mention award for its work in the special supplement category with a tribute to Bishop David Malloy on his 10-year anniversary as Bishop of Rockford. Amanda Hudson and Megan Peterson were awarded an honorable mention for “New Technology Helping More Diocesan Parishioners,” a story by Hudson and layout design by Peterson about how parishes are outfitting their sanctuaries with new sound technology to assist hard of hearing parishioners.
“The staff of The Observer works diligently every week to bring a quality newspaper filled with helpful information and inspiration, along with putting together all the material to publish an informative, useful and attractive diocesan directory. Our talented staff fulfills their call to serve the Church with this work but it is always gratifying to be recognized for a job well-done on a national stage of our peers,” said Penny Wiegert, editor of The Observer and diocesan director of communication.
The Diocesan Office of Communication staff of six produces The Observer newspaper each week, El Observador, a Spanish language monthly newspaper, the Diocesan Directory annually along with producing the Top of the Morning reflections on the Gospels by Bishop David Malloy every Monday through Friday on the local NBC affiliate, WREX Channel 13 and the weekly Catholic Mass also seen on the same channel every Sunday at 6:30 a.m.
