Dominican Literacy Center Awarded
November 30, 2023
AURORA—The Diocese of Rockford’s Aurora-based Dominican Literacy Center (DLC), run by the Dominican Sisters of Springfield, won a $5,000 successful practices award from the Library of Congress, as was announced in the Sept. 15 issue of The Observer.

Sister Kathleen Ryan, center founder and director; Sister Jane Ann Beckman, OP, instructor; and Alison Brzezinski, tutoring coordinator, traveled to the Library in Washington, D.C., to accept the award at an international conference.

The grant was among 18 Library of Congress literacy awards announced privately Sept. 8, International Literacy Day. The Aurora center was the only Midwest literacy center to receive a 2023 award.

Awards were presented on Oct. 18 at the Library's conference in Washington. In her award acceptance speech, Sister Kathleen said she accepted the prize on behalf all in the Dominican program.

“We are teaching people, not teaching books. Friendships form organically, students progress toward independence, and support springs from many   sources   in   this endeavor,” she said.

“To have The Library of Congress and the international literacy community recognize our mission is definitely cause for celebration.”
