ROCKFORD—Along with plenty of socializing, smiles and food, a silent auction (above right), live music and raffles galore (right) rounded out this year’s La Promesse luncheon fundraiser for the Catholic Women’s League.

A roomful of people gathered at Giovanni’s Restaurant, listened to music by the Mike Williamson Trio and dined on their choice of beef, chicken or vegetarian entrees. Last year, the CWL raised about $32,000 to benefit area programs, mostly focused on serving children in need but also including other entities like the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Bishop David Malloy offered the meal blessing and said, “These are the kinds of moments that are really good ... and that good is expanded ... into works of the Church.” He asked those present to “please pray for the Church ... for your priests and even for your bishop ... for the pope” and the Church worldwide.

The Catholic Women’s League began in 1909 and was instrumental in the start of what has become the St. Elizabeth Catholic Community Center in Rockford’s south central community. CWL has expanded its outreach to several area service providers with donations, an annual blanket-making day and hands-on service.
