Rite of Election Welcomes Adults at Two Gatherings March 9

ROCKFORD—At 10 a.m. and at 12:30 p.m. on March 9, people from parishes across the Diocese of Rockford gathered at the Cathedral of St. Peter for the Rite of Election.
 
The first rite was held in English, the second in Spanish.
 
“How welcome you are, all of you,” Bishop David Malloy said in his homily, noting the “inherent joy” that “this particular ceremony has each year.” The gathering at the cathedral, a “symbolic place” as the diocesan center, he added, carries a “certain sense of the unity of the diocese.”
 
The bishop spoke about Lent as being “a somber time” when “we look at our sinfulness because that is what separates us from Christ.” He noted that the season, with its “spiritual push,” is the “beginning of the beginning for you.”
 
Using his homily to provide encouragement and a bit of instruction, Bishop Malloy noted that “Christ called us to be part of His family, to be part of His people ...;”  that he and other cradle Catholics are reminded of the gift of the Church through the witness of the catechumens and candidates as they enter into full communion; and that “you, like all of us, are called to witness to the truth, to Christ (and to both) the easy ... and the controversial truths.”
 
He also cautioned them about a common temptation to be too attached to their particular class of students in RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults). “Now it is your turn to reach out” beyond that class to other parishioners, which “is where faith is lived,” he said.
 
Finally, Bishop Malloy encouraged them to be good ground for the seed of faith, allowing it to become deeply rooted within. 
 
The Rite of Election began with the presentation and enrollment of the names of the catechumens — men and women who have not yet been baptized. That list was presented to Bishop Malloy after the catechumens were affirmed by their godparents and spoke for themselves to answer “We do” when asked if they “wish to enter fully into the life of the Church through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist?”
 
The bishop then announced, “I now declare you to be members of the elect, to be initiated into the sacred mysteries at the next Easter Vigil,” and instructed the godparents to “continue to sustain them through your loving care and example ...”
 
Then the candidates — baptized men and women who will receive the sacraments of confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil — stood with their sponsors who witnessed to their progress in studies and formation. The candidates were recognized, the bishop said, “to be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and to have a place at Christ’s eucharistic table.”
 
The rite ended with Bishop Malloy praying over the elect and the candidates, asking God to “... add these chosen ones to the harvest of your new covenant...”
 
A reception that included meeting the bishop in person followed in the Fellowship Hall.
