Shamrock Shave Returns to Algonquin Parish
March 6, 2015

ALGONQUIN—Introduced seven years ago with low expectations, the Shamrock Shave benefit has quickly grown to become a major area fundraiser at St. Margaret Mary Parish, 111 S. Hubbard St., here.

Organizers estimate that more than 60 men, women and children will shave their heads to raise money for community families in need and for cancer research on March 14.

Event proceeds and pledges will be donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, to support community families in need, and to Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

“Shavees” this year will represent the Algonquin Fire Department, Police Department, Cub Scouts and the Knights of Columbus.

Last year’s Shamrock Shave  raised more than $40,000, which was a record. It put the total raised since 2008 at over $200,000.

“The Shamrock Shave is a unique fundraising event that brings the entire community together to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, while also raising money for two great causes,” said Jonna Burck, chairperson.

“Last year, once again, the shave exceeded all expectations,” she added. “This year we hope to raise even more money for charity, shave more heads, and have even more ‘Irish’ family fun.”

The event starts with a traditional Irish dinner of corned beef and cabbage at 5:30 p.m. in St. Margaret Mary School gymnasium and cafeteria. Dinner proceeds will also be donated to charity.

The “mane” festivities begin at 6:45 p.m. with head shavings staggered throughout the evening. Stylists from local hair salons have volunteered their time and other local businesses are providing food and monetary donations.

The Mayer School of Irish Dance will also be performing.

The fun-filled family evening will also include a jig and Irish costume contests, kid’s activities, door prizes and raffles.

Admission is $2 for adults   $1 for children, and free with a meal purchase.
