With a tree to symbolize growth, a flag for patriotism and pride (bottom), and a small San Damiano cross (left, second row) reminiscent of St. Francis of Assisi’s first message from God, the final structural beam was raised to the highest level of the up-and-coming OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center addition on Aug. 16.

The “topping off” ceremony included speakers, among them Paula Carynski, MS, RN, hospital president (right, second row).

Sister Judith Ann Duvall, OSF, chairperson for OSF HealthCare System, said, “God will bless this rising structure, (for) serving those in need of health care with the greatest care and love.”

Everyone was invited to sign the beam before it was raised and anchored into place by two workmen perched high above the ground.

The artificial tree and flag will be left in place and lighted nightly until the work on the building requires their removal.

The beam was blessed by Father Pierre Polycarpe (middle, second row), director of pastoral care at the hospital.

Ground was broken at the pavilion one year ago. The project  is scheduled to be completed in early 2018.

The 144,000 square foot addition will create 78 private rooms for patients, a PromptCare facility and new site for Women’s Services.

After the ceremony, Sister Judith and Sister Agnes Joseph Williams, OSF, joined others in eating sundaes with toppings. Three Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis came from Peoria to attend the event.
