Today, National Anthem May Seem Subversive
By Bishop Emeritus Thomas G. Doran

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

In case you wonder where these words come from, they are from the “Star Spangled Banner” by Francis Scott Key, our national anthem. I would caution you however, not to let any in the federal or state government know because the language might seem subversive. Such phrases as “the heaven rescued land,” and “praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation,” and “In God is our trust” are all forbidden phrases to our political government which strives mightily to exclude God from every facet of our lives.

It is interesting that since we exiled God from our government we have fought a whole skein of undeclared wars and police actions. Our liberties have been eroded with unspeakable crimes committed. Sometimes it seems that the “seven sacraments” of our devolving society are abortion, buggery, contraception, divorce, euthanasia, radical feminism, and genetic manipulation. Public offices purloin our tax money and perjure themselves in court with glee and abandon.

Perhaps it is time to ask whether eliminating God, and the things of God, from our national life comes back to haunt us. The Scripture tells us, “Unless the Lord build the house, they labor in vain who build it” (Ps 127:1).

It seems to me that we have to be more insistent in demanding that God be accorded rightful adoration and respect. This does not involve the establishment of religion which the Constitution of the United States says is outside the competence of Congress, but since four out of five Americans believe in God and the things of God it is truly monstrous that our government sends Him into exile.
