Eucharistic Ferverino
By Father Jonathan Bakkelund
Lately when Bishop Malloy travels through the diocese he’s been giving a ferverino [a quick exhortation] about the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and how to practically receive holy Communion.

I’ve had the opportunity to be a first hand eye witness that his instruction is very effective.

He reminds the folks in the pews of our Catholic belief that the Eucharist truly is Jesus. The sacred host is 100% Jesus in the most Blessed Sacrament and we should act accordingly.

He mentions that as we come forward to receive holy Communion we should be in a spiritual place where we are prepared to receive Jesus.

We should come forward slowly and intentionally. We should come forward in a recollected fashion. We should pause. Bow at the waist and then move forward to the priest (or minister) and either receive on the tongue or in the hand after saying “Amen.” We should receive right there and not walk away with the sacred host.

Bishop Malloy recommends we make the sign of the cross rather intentionally after receiving Jesus in holy Communion and then return to our pew and spend a couple moments in quiet prayer making an act of thanksgiving to Jesus for coming to us in holy Communion.

These are the “fundamentals” or “technicalities” on how to receive holy Communion. At the same time, they’re very important because they remind us of the significance of what is taking place.

Pope Francis keeps reminding us to have a “Eucharistic Amazement.” Slowing down, thinking about what we’re doing, and prayerfully receiving Jesus will sure help with that.
